FAQs : Nature Site Guide TGD/NSGd/2/0029 ...

The following provides clarification with regard to issues raised by Nature Guide candidates:

1.National Qualification Framework : The Nature Guiding Course provides learning with regard to unit standards :

8478 : create a guided experience for customers

8440 : conduct a guided nature experience in a limited geographical area

8456 : conduct a limited guided nature tour

These unit standards comprise the required learning for the National Qualification for the Nature Guide Level 2 (TGD/NSGd/2/0029) ... the entry level qualification for nature guiding.

2. Course Coverage : The course covers the following:

16 subject module lectures and active learning in the field (50%:50% split) as approved by THETA

 overnight accommodation

 action learning assignments & feedback

individual/group coaching by qualified and experienced trainers/field guides

 pre-assessment review & revision sessions

 course book and handouts

importantly the individual summative assessment in terms of competency to gain the National Qualification and the moderation thereof, and

THETA registration.

This learning process is supported by the recording and storage of backup documentation required to be kept for each candidate guide in terms of their learning and development record.

3. Certification of Competency : Competency for unit standards is determined on two levels ... the formative assessment by way of written submissions and course examination. The course examination is a one hour exercise requiring a pass mark of 75% as set by The Nature College at an appropriate time & location.

Secondly, the summative assessment is a practical evaluation of a guiding scenario in the field. You will be required to conduct a 45 minute guided nature trail and will be evaluated by an assessor.

THETA is then notified of the competency outcome and a certificate is issued. This competency certificate together with a basic first aid medical qualification means that you can register with the Department of Economic Development and legally lead people into a natural environment.

4. Course Dates & Content : This is an adult learning course and the dates will be set to suit the learning group at a mutually convenient times & locations. Please refer to the program page for proposed details for the next course.

If people are not available for some of the modules, then we  arrange catch up sessions. Each class session commences with a brief overview of what was presented at the previous session in any event ie reflective learning.

5. Course Venue : The actual venue has lecture style learning facilities and is close to a nature site to conduct practical experiential learning. We utilize a number of suitable venues in the local environs. The venue may change depending on the course material being reviewed and prevailing weather conditions.

6. Accreditation Status : The course, trainers and assessors are fully accredited with the Tourism & Hospitality Education Training Authority (THETA) and Mons Mensa is affiliated to The Nature College. The Nature College is a fully accredited nature guide training institution.

7. Registration Process : Please indicate your desire to attend the Nature Guiding course by return email and a registration form for completion will be sent to you. This form together with a deposit of 50% of the course fee will secure your place on the course. The balance is required prior to the date of commencement of the course.

8. Success to Date : In the time we have been running the annual Nature Guiding course 30 candidates have been deemed competent representing 95% of participants. Some have been inspired to take their studies further, either for personal benefit or to become more proficient guides. Some have taken up employment with overlanding companies, game reserves or freelance as guides for tour operators.
