Mountain Desert

The far north-western Cape, known as the Richtersveld, is arguably the most breathtakingly beautiful region of the Southern African sub-continent, one of the last remaining wilderness areas in South Africa. The spectacular desert scenery contrasts vividly with the life-giving waters of the Orange River, around which the dark hills and forbidding mountains blend.

The name 'Halfmens' (Pachypodium namaquanum) derives from Nama folklore. It is said that when their ancestors were driven south by invading tribes, those who looked back were transformed into a Halfmens plant which always point north.

The Kokerboom (Aloe dichotoma) when translated means Quiver tree. Simon van der Stel in 1685 noted that the San skilfully fashioned pin cushion quivers for their arrows from the soft branches of this tree.

Dates: March through to October
